In 2024, car theft continued to be a major issue across the United States, but certain vehicles were far more likely to be stolen than others.

This visualization ranks the 10 most stolen cars in the U.S., highlighting the overwhelming presence of Hyundai and Kia vehicles at the top of the list.

The data for this visualization comes from Finance Buzz. From sedans to pickup trucks, the numbers show just how frequently specific models were targeted—and why certain design flaws may have played a role.

The top two most stolen cars in 2024 were the Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Sonata, with over 58,000 combined thefts. Kia’s Optima and Soul also made the top 10.

A major reason for this spike is that many Hyundai and Kia models produced between 2011 and 2021 lack electronic engine immobilizers—basic anti-theft tech now standard in most vehicles.

This omission made it easier for thieves to exploit vulnerabilities, especially after viral social media videos demonstrated how to steal these cars using simple tools.

U.S. auto theft peaked at 1,020,729 vehicles in 2023, with 2024 thefts totaling 850,708 (the lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic). The rise of remote hacking tools, economic pressures, and social media “theft challenges” have all contributed.

Pickup trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ford F150 were also frequently stolen, likely due to their high resale value and widespread popularity. Notably, popular sedans such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to appear on theft lists year after year, a sign of ongoing demand in illegal car parts markets.
